General information from the CAPSIVERA editorial team – not individual tax advice, no liability assumed.
A tax advisor (Steuerberater) for content creators in Germany must be licensed under § 3 StBerG, which you can check for free in the official register of the Federal Chamber of Tax Advisors (§ 86b StBerG). They should know the creator topics for 2026 without looking them up: the €24,500 trade tax allowance, the small business limits of €25,000 and €100,000, VAT on foreign platforms and the W-8BEN. Fees follow the StBVV unless you agree a fee in text form (§ 4 StBVV).
Who is allowed to give you tax advice in Germany
Unrestricted help in tax matters is reserved for certain professions under § 3 StBerG: tax advisors (Steuerberater), tax agents (Steuerbevollmächtigte), lawyers, auditors (Wirtschaftsprüfer) and sworn book auditors, as well as professional firms of these groups. Someone who calls themselves a "creator tax expert" without belonging to one of these groups may not prepare your tax returns as a business.
A wage tax assistance association (Lohnsteuerhilfeverein) is normally not an option for creators. Under § 4(3) StBerG, it may not advise members who have income from a trade or from self-employment, or who make VAT-liable supplies. That is the normal situation for creators.
An advisor in your home country can help with questions about that country, but your German returns and dealings with the German tax office need someone authorised in Germany.
How to check a licence:
Official register: The Federal Chamber of Tax Advisors (Bundessteuerberaterkammer) keeps a central electronic register of all tax advisors and recognised firms. Anyone can look up individual entries free of charge, online at steuerberaterverzeichnis.berufs-org.de.
Professional duties: Tax advisors must work independently and conscientiously and keep everything confidential (§ 57 StBerG). This covers your income, contracts and brand partners.
Liability insurance: Self-employed tax advisors must carry professional indemnity insurance (§ 67 StBerG).
Creator tax topics a Steuerberater should know in 2026
The following topics come up in creator cases all the time. Use them in a first conversation to test whether an advisor knows the business model. For a full overview, see taxes for content creators in Germany.
Topic | Rule or figure 2026 | Legal basis |
|---|---|---|
Trade tax allowance (individuals) | €24,500 of trade income | |
Trade tax base rate | 3.5% | § 11(2) GewStG |
Credit against income tax | 4 × base amount, capped at trade tax payable | |
Small business regulation | total turnover max. €25,000 previous year and €100,000 current year | |
Waiving the small business regulation | binding for at least five calendar years | § 19(3) UStG |
Services to EU businesses (e.g. Google Ireland) | no German VAT; EC Sales List by the 25th day after the quarter, not for small businesses | |
Platforms that set the terms (OnlyFans, Patreon, Twitch) | platform counts as supplier to fans | § 3(11a) UStG, CJEU C-695/20 |
US withholding on royalties for German residents | 0% with W-8BEN and treaty claim | IRS Tax Treaty Table 1 |
Basic income tax allowance (single) | €12,348 |
There are also topics without a fixed figure: products received in return for posts, donations, agency commissions and the question of which platform entity pays you. The platform guides explain them, for example YouTube taxes in Germany and OnlyFans taxes in Germany.
Language and dealing with the tax office
The official language of the German tax administration is German (§ 87 AO). Letters from the tax office, assessments (Steuerbescheid) and deadlines arrive in German, and ELSTER forms are in German. For English speakers, this is often the main reason to hire an advisor.
Points to clarify:
Correspondence: Ask in which language the firm can explain assessments and questions to you, and in which language you will receive its own letters.
Power of attorney: With your authorisation, the advisor can receive your tax assessments electronically and keep track of deadlines.
Your three numbers: A good advisor explains the difference straight away: your personal tax ID (Steuer-ID) from the Federal Central Tax Office, your tax number (Steuernummer) from the local tax office after the registration questionnaire, and your VAT ID (USt-IdNr.) for EU business customers. Registration is explained in registering as a self-employed creator.
Letters you should forward immediately: assessments, requests for information, estimated assessments (Schätzungsbescheid) and prepayment notices. Many have one-month deadlines.
Questions to ask in the first meeting
A good answer is specific and names the legal basis without needing to look it up.
How do you treat income from YouTube, TikTok, Twitch or Patreon for VAT, and when do I need an EC Sales List?
How do you handle products I receive in return for a post?
Which of my income counts towards the small business limit, and who monitors the €100,000 limit during the year?
How do you calculate my trade tax and the credit, and how much should I set aside every month?
Which software do we use, and how do platform statements and bank data reach you?
Who is my regular contact, and who monitors VAT return deadlines?
What is included in the fee, and what is charged separately? Will we have a written fee agreement?
How would you proceed if income was not declared correctly in previous years?
Also watch whether risks are stated openly. An advisor who answers every question with "no problem" is not a good sign.
Fees: StBVV or fee agreement
Without a special agreement, tax advisors charge under the Tax Advisors' Fee Regulation (StBVV), which sets fee ranges for each type of work. It was last amended with effect from 1 July 2025. Where no value can be determined, a time-based fee of €16.50 to €41 per started quarter of an hour applies (§ 13 StBVV).
Alternatively, you can agree a flat or monthly fee. Under § 4 StBVV, the agreement must be in text form, be labelled as a fee agreement, be clearly separated from other agreements and describe the type and scope of the work. The advisor must also tell you in text form that a fee higher or lower than the statutory one can be agreed. Check that the agreement lists exactly which services are included. Worked examples in German are at what a tax advisor costs for creators (in German).
Example: A two-hour meeting billed under § 13 StBVV.
Item | Lower end | Upper end |
|---|---|---|
Started quarter hours | 8 | 8 |
Rate per quarter hour | €16.50 | €41.00 |
Time-based fee (net) | €132.00 | €328.00 |
VAT 19% | €25.08 | €62.32 |
Total | €157.08 | €390.32 |
Worked example: trade tax and reserve for a creator in Cologne
An advisor should be able to tell you in advance which taxes are coming. Trade tax is a typical example, because many creators only notice it with their first assessment.
Example: A creator living and working in Cologne makes a profit of €60,000 as a sole trader. There are no add-backs. Cologne's trade tax multiplier for 2026 is 475%.
Step | Amount |
|---|---|
Profit = trade income | €60,000.00 |
Allowance | −€24,500.00 |
Taxable trade income | €35,500.00 |
Trade tax base amount (3.5%) | €1,242.50 |
Trade tax (475%) | €5,901.88 |
Credit against income tax (4 × €1,242.50) | −€4,970.00 |
Remaining burden from trade tax | €931.88 |
Quarterly prepayment in the following year (€5,901.88 ÷ 4) | about €1,475 |
The full trade tax is paid to the city; the relief only comes with the income tax assessment. The credit requires at least €4,970 of income tax on the business income. After the first assessment, the city sets quarterly prepayments (§ 19 GewStG), so in the first year you may face a back payment and new prepayments at the same time. Recalculate your own figures with the trade tax calculator (in German) and read trade tax for creators.
Special cases
Creators with a job: If you are employed and create content on the side, you have two types of income. The small business regulation and a clean separation of expenses matter most.
Moving to Germany mid-year: In the year you arrive, the date you took up residence matters for what Germany taxes. Bring your foreign tax documents to the first meeting.
Switching to a GmbH: With high profits, a limited company can make sense. The advisor should then also cover annual accounts, corporate tax and the managing director's salary.
Agency or management: If an agency invoices brand deals for you, clarify who supplies the brand and who charges commission to whom.
Undeclared previous years: If income was not declared, the correction must be planned before the tax office finds it. See OnlyFans taxes in Germany for the rules on voluntary disclosure.
Changing advisor: A change is normally possible during the year, subject to your contract's notice terms. See changing tax advisor (in German).
Common mistakes
Not checking the licence: Not everyone who gives creator tax tips may prepare tax returns. The register check takes a minute.
Hiring a Lohnsteuerhilfeverein: It may not advise on business income. Returns then have to be redone.
Looking for help too late: Many creators only look for help after their first assessment or an estimated assessment. Deadlines, the small business limit and prepayments are easier to plan earlier.
No written fee agreement: Without a description of services, it is unclear what a flat fee covers.
Not disclosing all platforms and contracts: An advisor can only assess what they know. Missing income sources, agencies or products received lead to incorrect returns.
Deciding on price alone: Mistakes in VAT or trade tax often cost more than the difference in fees.

Frequently asked questions
How do I find a good tax advisor in Germany as a content creator?
Check the licence in the official register of the Federal Chamber of Tax Advisors, then test the know-how: VAT on foreign platforms, the W-8BEN, the €25,000 and €100,000 small business limits and the €24,500 trade tax allowance. Agree a written fee with a clear description of services.
How can I check whether someone is really a Steuerberater?
Search the official register at steuerberaterverzeichnis.berufs-org.de. It lists all tax advisors, tax agents and recognised firms. Under § 86b StBerG, anyone may look up individual entries free of charge.
Can a Lohnsteuerhilfeverein do my tax return as an influencer?
Usually not. Under § 4(3) StBerG, wage tax assistance associations may not advise members with income from a trade or self-employment or with VAT-liable supplies. Creator income is usually business income.
How much does a Steuerberater cost in Germany?
Without an agreement, fees follow the StBVV. Where the time-based fee applies, it is €16.50 to €41 per started quarter of an hour (§ 13 StBVV), so €132 to €328 net for two hours. Many firms agree a flat or monthly fee instead, which must be in text form (§ 4 StBVV).
Will the German tax office write to me in English?
No. The official language of the tax administration is German (§ 87 AO), so assessments, letters and ELSTER forms are in German. Ask any advisor in which language they can explain assessments and correspondence to you.
Does my tax advisor need to be in my city?
No. There is no requirement for the advisor to be local. Receipts, platform statements and assessments can be exchanged digitally. It matters more that the firm knows the creator business model and monitors deadlines reliably.
